Servings 1.5 cups

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce your favorite brand
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Louisiana hot sauce or similar
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Instructions

Step 1: Mix Your Base

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the BBQ sauce, ketchup, and water. Stir over low heat until it’s smooth and blended.

Step 2: Add The Kick

  • Pour in the apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and hot sauce. Give it a good stir. You’ll start to smell the tangy kick that makes Chicago Mild Sauce so unique.

Step 3: Season It Up

  • Add paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and bring the mixture to a low simmer.

Step 4: Let It Simmer

  • Let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The flavors will meld and it’ll thicken slightly. Don’t let it boil—just a gentle simmer.

Step 5: Taste & Adjust

  • Take a little spoonful (careful, it's hot) and taste. You can add more hot sauce if you want it spicier, or a pinch of sugar if you prefer it sweeter.

Step 6: Cool & Store

  • Let the sauce cool completely. Pour into a clean jar or bottle and refrigerate. It’ll keep for up to 2 weeks.
